dog FERRET CARE TIPS

Just like any other living creature, a ferret requires a certain amount of nurturing and care. Smaller pets, like a ferret, require even more attention. Since they are small, they can hide just about anywhere. They are also quite fast and could accidentally get underfoot. Keeping them contained in a ferret cage is part of keeping them safe. Here we have included some other helpful suggestions for the care of your ferret friend.

  • 1. Not only are ferrets small, but they have quick metabolism that digests food instantly. This is why they require at least seven to ten meals each day to ensure proper nutrition. Foods that are low in fiber, high in protein, and contain fat are recommended.

  • 2. When exposed to the outdoors, ferrets can susceptible to colds and diseases. It is best to stay away from a ferret whenever you have a cold or illness.

  • 3. When picking up the ferret out of the cage, be sure to pick it up from behind. It is also important to support the ferret’s chest and hips when lifting.

  • 4. Ferrets are able to eat bits of mashed banana, green peas, seedless melon, and cucumber. Any vegetables, fruits, starches, and meats that can be grinded or mashed are perfect for ferrets, because they are much easier for them to consume.

  • 5. For a well-equipped and well-sanitized ferret cage, place a water bottle inside but make sure that it won’t occupy too much space. Make sure the water bottle does not have any leaks and place a newspaper at the bottom of it to absorb any liquid from falling.

  • 6. Provide toys in the cage for the ferret to play with. As a precaution, do not give your ferret any toys that are small enough to be swallowed or made from any harmful materials.

  • 7. Litter boxes are not just for cats. Ferrets can also be trained to use a litter box. With a large enough cage, you can easily place a litter box inside of it.

  • 8. To prevent female ferrets from suffering anemia, especially when ovulating, it is suggested to spray some sterilizing liquid on her body.

  • 9. The ferret cage is a safe and comfortable way to keep them protected, while proving them room to play. However, your energetic friend can also benefit from extra play time outside of the cage. Just be sure to keep a close eye on the ferret.

  • 10. Ferrets are prone to intestinal parasites, heartworms, and fleas. So be sure to keep your ferret clean and healthy. Also, get the ferret vaccinated by your nearest veterinarian against rabies and canine distemper.
